TEAM 8451A - "The Originals" are
headed for
Louisville, Kentucky to compete in the
VEX World Championship!

For the first time in District history, Harlandale ISD students are headed to the VEX Robotics World Championship.

STEM Early College High School Robotics Team 8451A advanced to the international competition after coming out as a semi-finalist in the VEX Robotics South Texas Championship held in Houston, Texas on Feb. 25.

The students competed against 56 teams from across the state and are one of the six semi-finalists.

The team consists of Nick Cortez, Justice Cortez, Vincent Banuelos, Noah Johnson, Penelope Pongpiaehan, Dulce Zuniga, Ingrid Rios and Nathaniel Tapia.

“We worked on our robot since August so all of the hard work paid off in that moment, but as soon as we got back to school we were ready to work on it again,” Banuelos said.

The students credited their success to their coach and mentor, Mr. Romeo Valdez.

The students all agreed, that without Valdez, they would be lost.

“Freshmen and sophomore year he was really directing us and now he trusts us,” Nick Cortez said. “We work on the robot by ourselves, but he is always there to answer any questions we have.”

Valdez will continue to guide the students as they prepare to battle it out with 540 teams from across the world.

The world championship will take place in Louisville, Kentucky on April 19-22.

Congratulations, Rattlers!
